Course Overview

Description

What you will learn:

By completing this course, learners will develop the ability to interpret and apply the SACPCMP Code of Conduct within their daily professional practice, ensuring that ethical principles guide decision making at all levels. The course builds a clear understanding of the ethical and legal obligations placed on construction and project management professionals, while equipping learners with practical ethical decision making frameworks to address real world construction dilemmas. Participants will learn to recognise and effectively manage conflicts of interest, transparency risks, and instances of professional misconduct, and to integrate ethical considerations into health, safety, environmental, and quality management systems. In doing so, the course reinforces the importance of ethical leadership, accountability, and lifelong learning as essential components of responsible and sustainable practice within the built environment.

Module Guide:

Module 1: Integrity and Honesty. This module explores the foundational role of integrity and honesty in construction practice. Learners examine how truthful communication, accurate reporting, and ethical behaviour underpin trust between clients, contractors, consultants, and regulators. Common ethical dilemmas such as underquoting, misrepresentation of progress, and hidden costs are unpacked, with guidance on applying ethical decision-making frameworks to uphold fairness and transparency in contractual and professional relationships.

Module 2 – Professional Practice, Competence, Due Care and Responsibility. This module focuses on the ethical obligation of professionals to act competently and with due care at all times. Learners gain an understanding of professional limitations, the importance of continuous development, and the responsibility to seek specialist input when required. Emphasis is placed on accountability, sound judgment, and the ethical consequences of negligence, particularly where decisions may impact safety, quality, or public welfare.

Module 3 – Transparency and Fair Dealing. Learners are introduced to the principles of transparency and fairness in procurement, reporting, and stakeholder engagement. The module highlights the ethical requirement for open communication, truthful disclosure of information, and fair treatment of all parties. It addresses risks associated with unethical practices such as favouritism, bribery, and non disclosure, and reinforces the importance of maintaining credibility and trust throughout the project lifecycle.

Module 4 – Compliance with Laws and Regulations. This module examines compliance as both a legal and ethical responsibility. Learners explore the regulatory framework governing construction practice, including occupational health and safety, environmental legislation, and building standards. The module emphasises that non compliance not only exposes professionals to legal consequences, but also undermines public trust and professional integrity.

Module 5 – Confidentiality and Respect for Information. This module focuses on the ethical handling of sensitive, confidential, and proprietary information. Learners gain insight into their responsibilities regarding data protection, intellectual property, and professional discretion. The importance of respecting client information, project documentation, and organisational data is reinforced as a core element of ethical professional conduct.

Module 6 – Professional Independence and Avoidance of Conflicts of Interest. Learners explore the ethical risks associated with conflicts of interest and compromised professional independence. This module provides guidance on identifying potential conflicts, declaring interests appropriately, and maintaining objectivity in decision making. The consequences of failing to manage conflicts are examined, along with best practice approaches for safeguarding professional integrity.

Module 7 – Health, Safety and Environmental Responsibility. This module reinforces the ethical duty of construction professionals to protect human life, promote safe working environments, and minimise environmental harm. Learners examine how ethical decision making aligns with occupational health and safety responsibilities and environmental stewardship, highlighting the moral obligation to prioritise people and the environment over cost or programme pressures.

Module 8 – Respect, Diversity and Ethical Treatment of People. This module addresses ethical conduct in relation to human dignity, equality, and respectful treatment in the workplace. Learners explore issues such as discrimination, harassment, fair labour practices, and inclusive leadership. The module reinforces the role of ethical professionals in fostering respectful, safe, and equitable working environments.

Module 9 – Commitment to Quality and Excellence. Learners examine the ethical relationship between quality, professionalism, and accountability. This module highlights the importance of adherence to standards, accurate documentation, and quality assurance processes as ethical obligations rather than administrative tasks. The ethical consequences of cutting corners and compromising quality are explored through practical examples.

Module 10 – Professional Development and Lifelong Learning. This module emphasises continuous professional development as an ethical responsibility. Learners explore the importance of maintaining competence, staying informed about evolving legislation and industry standards, and embracing lifelong learning. The module reinforces that stagnation and outdated knowledge constitute ethical risk in a dynamic construction environment.

Module 11 – Social Responsibility and Community Impact. Learners are introduced to the broader societal role of construction professionals. This module examines ethical responsibilities related to community engagement, environmental sustainability, and long term project impact. It highlights how ethical decisions contribute to positive social outcomes and sustainable development beyond project completion.

Module 12 – SACPCMP Requirements and Ethical Accountability. The final module focuses on the statutory and ethical obligations of professionals registered with SACPCMP. Learners gain a clear understanding of disciplinary processes, consequences of unethical conduct, and the importance of compliance with professional codes of conduct. The module concludes by reinforcing ethical leadership, accountability, and public trust as the cornerstones of professional practice.
